There are some relationships in this world that are extremely important and one cannot survive without. One of the topmost would be our friends. When young, children can start out with imaginary friends who are there for them all the time. Some children also find friends in their pets. As we grow older and our socializing skills improve, we learn to make friends in school, college and our work places.
Friends play a very important role in our lives. They influence our personalities, provide emotional comfort and support, and can be our best companions, in times of fun as well as sadness.
Considering the value of friendship since time immemorial, it is no surprise that a day has been dedicated to this amazing relationship as the International Friendship Day. This day is celebrated on the first Sunday of August every year and began in US in 1935. In 1997 the United Nations named Winnie the Pooh as the Ambassador of Friendship. It is now celebrated all over the world, including India, with much enthusiasm.
The day is celebrated by acknowledging the importance and special place of friends in our lives. Gifting them with flowers, cards, etc is a popular tradition. Friends celebrate together and enjoy the day with each other.
Whether you have one friend or a hundred, the important thing is to have that special and most important person in your life and to be able to express how you feel about them on this special day.
